Fresh Baked Bread or Cookies

Realtors have been using this strategy for years when hosting open houses.  They have bread or cookies baking throughout the event so the house smells warm, inviting and homey.  A small handful of super-savvy dentists and chiropractors do the same thing in their offices to relax patients and make them look forward to the visit (rather than dread it).

The olfactory sense is powerful, capable of instantly bringing up memories and emotions about our childhood, home, family, good times, etc.  But this powerful psychological tool is overlooked by most floor retailers.  For a small investment you can install a small oven in your store and keep a supply of pre-made bread and/or cookie dough on hand.  Assign a staff member to slide a pan of cookies or bread into the oven first thing in the morning, and then again in the afternoon, or as often as necessary to keep the store smelling good.  Put the baked goods out front for your walk-in clients to enjoy.
