A new hair salon opened on the main street of a small town. The owner invested her life savings to create her dream: a high-quality salon. Things were going along well until another salon opened directly across the street from her. The new salon had a huge sign painted on the front of their window reading:
Hair Cuts…$5!
The high-quality salon owner immediately began losing customers. In desperation she sought out marketing advice from an expert, who advised her on what to do. She immediately painted an even larger sign in the front of her salon. It read:
We Fix $5 Hair Cuts!
Problem solved.
The Lesson: We’re all sick and tired of having clients walk in and tell us that Home Depot “Will install a whole house of carpet for only $99!” You now have a very quick response for them:
“Fantastic! We fix $99 installations!”
This opens the door to present them with the Consumer’s Guide To Floor Covering, and educate them on why the $99 installation (or $109, or $129) is a myth. That the installers send Home Depot a bill far larger than $99, so the difference is made up by increasing the price of the materials, etc.
