Cook stuff in your store

With the thinning of the herd taking place in all business categories it’s important that you take your customer service “up a notch” to set yourself apart.  It’s appalling how even in the face of bankruptcy, most businesses continue to take the ever-dwindling supply of customers for granted.  Lousy service, customers treated with indifference, etc., etc.

The olfactory sense is powerful for creating a sense of “home” and well-being.  That’s why I’m a huge advocate of cooking nice smelling foods in your store.

Think about it from the point of view of a prospect or client who visits your store after visiting 3 other flooring stores.  They’ve most likely had a fairly mediocre experience at each, including the smell.  Now they walk into your store and think… “Mmmmmm, is that chocolate chip cookies I smell?”

You’ve just instantly set yourself apart.

And it’s so easy to do.  A small oven is all you need.  You can buy pre-made cookie and bread dough. Assign one of your staff to pop a dozen cookies into the oven first thing in the morning, and repeat every couple of hours.  Cost: a few bucks a day.  Benefit: total differentiation = more sales, more money and more referrals.
