Until 1997 I had some very wrong ideas about building a business and building wealth. I also had a very limited (and inaccurate) view of my own abilities. Yes, I’d been starting my own businesses since 8th grade, and I’d accomplished some good things, but my mindset was holding me back. I was living far beneath my potential, and deep down I knew it. But I didn’t know what to do about it.
It was in 1997 when I met one of my first true business coaches, Joe Polish, and through him I was introduced to Dan Kennedy. These two men came from very humble beginnings, and had both had faced times in their lives when they were dead broke. They overcame their obstacles and achieved amazing success. Their stories spoke to me because I grew up poor and broke, and had spent most of my adult life struggling financially in one way or another. I remember in my early twenties lamenting that I didn’t have any rich relatives who could teach me. I’d grown up seeing rich kids enjoy the fruits of their parent’s labors, and I thought you needed that “legacy” in order to achieve much. What Dan’s and Joe’s stories taught me was that you didn’t have to be born to a wealthy family to achieve wealth and success. Building and running a highly profitable business, and building true wealth as a result, is something that can be learned from coaches. This was a huge paradigm shift for me.
Neither Dan nor Joe graduated from college. So I learned that you DON’T need a college education to be successful. That, in fact, a college education can actually be a hindrance in some ways. This was another huge paradigm shift.
They also introduced me to an entire world of people who were highly successful. Through books, CD’s and coaching they became my surrogate mentors. I was so desperate to change things that I was willing to do anything, including relearning bad mental habits and reshaping my mindset.
Your mindset—your view about yourself, your business, the world—was forged through of a lifetime of conditioning and experiences. It’s unrealistic to expect it to change overnight, or for it to be easy. It certainly wasn’t for me. It’s not something that you do once and move on. Building and maintaining a healthy mindset are ongoing activities. It’s like eating healthy or exercising; you can’t stay healthy by just doing it once. You have to keep at it. The same with mindset. That’s why feeding yourself an ongoing, steady stream of “brain food” (like you get in the Inner Circle Club) is critical for not only forging a healthy, success-oriented mindset, but for keeping it that way.
Don’t Ignore The “Brain Food”
Taking your business and personal development to the next level in 2010 has more to do with the internal conditions of attitude and mindset than it does with external conditions like the economy. Over the next twelve months you are going to get an ongoing supply of marketing strategies. Use them. But you are also going to get an ongoing supply of “brain food” to help you develop the right mindset. Don’t ignore the brain food. Investing time and energy into developing the right attitude about your business, about money and about achieving your Ideal Lifestyle will pay huge dividends.
It will change your life.
